Family & carer involvement and partnership

At Ellern Mede, we recognise that families and carers are central to the recovery journey. Our aim is to involve families and carers as full partners in their relative’s care from the outset, with regular updates, involvement in formulation meetings, family therapy sessions and collaborative goal-based treatment planning.

We understand that having a loved one in hospital is often a difficult time for families and carers, and we are here to provide support. We aim to strengthen relationships and rebuild trust where needed, ensuring recovery is supported both within and beyond the hospital. Through psychoeducation and practical guidance, we equip families with tools to understand their relative’s conditions and sustain progress on the recovery journey.

Relatives are invited to participate in:

  • Fortnightly multidisciplinary team (MDT) review meetings
  • Weekly written feedback to MDT review meetings
  • Regular CPA meetings
  • Formulation meetings to support shared understanding of needs and risks
  • Goal-setting and discharge planning discussions

In addition to involvement in individual care, families are invited to attend monthly family governance meetings, where they can provide feedback and contribute to service development.

Ellern Mede provides specialist inpatient mental health care for children (aged 8+), adolescents and adults with complex presentations, including eating disorders, trauma-related difficulties, emotional dysregulation, neurodivergence and overlapping mental health needs.

We accept referrals from NHS commissioners and international health authorities, and welcome private enquiries via self-funding or medical insurance.

All referrals are subject to clinical review to assess suitability, level of risk and therapeutic fit.
