Family Therapy

Our team of Family Therapists offer the vital support needed to create positive dynamics within the home and family setting.  We have an outstanding record of working alongside families to improve communications.  Family involvement and group support are key in the recovery treatment process and our friendly professionals will work closely with you to tailor your specific programme. Parents play a crucial role in supporting their child’s recovery, as well as in relapse prevention. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends family therapy as the treatment of choice for young people with anorexia.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy enables families to explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely, to understand each others needs and to help support the young person to manage once they return home.  Positive change is created in partnership with families by building on people’s strengths, experiences and resources whilst being sensitive to different family systems, cultures and beliefs. Family based approaches have been evidenced as effective in clinical practice worldwide. We offer family therapy in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and it can be accessed by the family as a group or individually.

Parent Support

The Family Therapy Team run a monthly group for parents which offers psycho-education and support.  The Parent Support Group is an opportunity for parents to share experience and strategies for improving communication and assessing domestic conditions for the return home.  Family involvement and group support are key in the recovery treatment process and you will be well supported by the Ellern Mede team of professionals.

“There is a great need in the UK for family therapy to be integrated with treatment programmes for eating disorder patients.. We know that recovery from an eating disorder requires specialist treatment, family involvement and post discharge support which we can offer seamlessly through an inpatient to outpatient pathway with the same clinical team around the young person and family. “
