Ellern Mede specialist eating disorder teams include consultant psychiatrists psychologists, dietitians and therapists including family and systemic therapists.

Initial Assessment appointment times are by arrangement between 9am and 8pm weekdays.

This purpose-designed hospital will offer advanced and unique treatment programs including day services. Post discharge support is always very important in the care of Eating Disorders and Ellern Mede will offer follow up outpatient care at the hospital and also at clinics in Harley Street and Wimpole Street.

This new service complements the specialist eating disorder services Ellern Mede already provides at Ellern Mede Ridgeway in Mill Hill London, which are largely contracted by the NHS and other governmental agencies.

“Ellern Mede’s new services at Barnet are offering exciting new treatment programmes for eating disorders initially to the private marketplace.  Our new services are specifically designed for children and young adults that are at the earlier stages of diagnosis and treatment and can benefit  from immediate and tailor made treatment and may find the private route is possibly the best of the options available to them,” explains Peter Curtis, Managing Director.

  • Ellern Mede Barnet will also offer two specific and innovative programs. Family Therapy based intensive six week programme for children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 with anorexia nervosa and their families
  • Bulimia/Binge Eating Disorder intensive 2 to 5 week programme for young adults up to age 30

The Ellern Mede Family Therapy based programme for children draws on similar programmes with an international evidence-base for successful outcomes at leading hospitals in the USA, Canada and Australia.

The Ellern Mede Adult Bulimia / Binge Eating Disorder service is an intensive short-term programme which focuses on medical stabilisation and ‘symptom interruption’, skills-transfer and preparation of the patient to self-manage their symptoms and move towards recovery with ongoing outpatient support.

Both programmes, seek to minimise disruption to the person’s and his/her family’s usual life routines and responsibilities such as work and education and to reduce the need for long-term hospital stays.

By focusing on early intervention the Ellern Mede approach also helps to halt this devastating illness before it takes hold and becomes treatment resistant.

Two main advantages are the treatment of the whole family as opposed to the patient only and immediate availability without waiting times.

Dr Hind Al Khairulla, clinical director of Ellern Mede said:  “Evidence clearly shows that early intervention in eating disorders is crucial to reversing what can rapidly become an enduring and debilitating condition. Families should seek treatment as soon as possible,”
