The Care Quality Commission revisited Ellern Mede in March 2017 and in a review of its 2016 report gave Ellern Mede an overall Good rating across all the domains it inspects.
We are pleased that the CQC revisited the unit so promptly to review all our recent improvement work both in terms of environment, process and patient care and that the Good rating finds our service safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
Patients gave a lot of positive feedback about staff and said they were kind, caring, visible on the wards. They confirmed they were aware and able to use the Advocacy service and aware of how to complain if they needed to.
The CQC found our risk assessments were good and particularly complemented the service on its introduction of a new system of Patient Involvement in Reducing Restrictive Interventions. There is an effective system in place to report and learn from incidents. Training and supervision for staff was also good. 24 hour medical cover was praised and it was found that a doctor could attend the ward quickly during an emergency. Staffing levels were found to be more than sufficient to permit one to one time between patients and their named nurse.
